Tanzania - Get lost in the vibrant street life of Dar Es Salaam

Tanzania sightseeing, attractions and online travel guide

The largest city in Tanzania with undoubtedly the largest personality, Dar Es Salaam is one of the most bustling natural harbours in the world. Literally translated from the Arabic as "haven of peace”, the vibrancy of Dar Es Salaam and its thronging street life doesn’t quite fit the name anymore. Brimming with colourful markets, Itala Market is propounded to be the city’s best, selling everything from fresh food and textiles to pots and pans and pretty much anything else you might be after. Other markets include the one at Kariakoo, overflowing with fresh fruit, fish, pungent spices and vegetables, whilst the early birds can check out the fish market on Ocean Road if you fancy a nice cut of shark or barracuda with your chips. Beware however, with bustle comes hustle so keep a mindful eye on your wallets in case some nimble fingered gimp decides you’re going to be their very own bargain of the day.
