Tanzania - Sugar & Spice on the island of Zanzibar
Tanzania sightseeing, attractions and online travel guide

With the Indian Ocean lapping at its shores and the air heavy with the aroma of pungent spices and spice oils, Zanzibar couldn’t get more exotic if it put on a Carmen Miranda headdress and shook some maracas. Check out the amazing tastes and tangs of the cloves of nutmeg, cinnamon, pepper and innumerable other spices first brought to the island by the Sultans of Oman at the start of the notorious slave trade. Most visitors indulge in a spice tour where the goods can be tasted before purchase at plantations just outside Zanzibar Town. The deliciously heady spices and oils can be bought for a fraction of the price of elsewhere. Have your senses dazzled and your minds completely blown with the sheer variety of spices and their ancient, yet innovative uses in cooking, cosmetics and medicine. No prizes for guessing why Zanzibar is known as the spice island – just rest assured it is nothing to do with girl power.
