Coming from the Masai ‘siringet’ meaning endless plains, the Serengeti is undoubtedly one of the world's last great wildlife refuges and being the size of Northern Ireland, the plains really do seem endless. Covering a staggering 14,763sq km, the park contains an estimated three million large animals and is renowned for its annual migration of more than 4,5 million wildebeest not to mention hundreds of thousands of zebra and gazelle. This is the land supporting the greatest remaining concentration of plains game in Africa, if not the world and is without question one of nature's wonders. The park heaves with elephants, lions, waterbuck, impala, giraffe and even the odd rhino and leopard, it’s also a fantastic destination for birdwatchers with over three hundred different species colouring the air. The Serengeti is a spectacular living, breathing picture book safari and is best visited between the months of October and May.
