Tunisia - Carthage

Tunisia sightseeing, attractions and online travel guide

The Romans, being so damned brilliant at everything they did unfortunately made a fantastic job of totally destroying their biggest and most threatening rival. Therefore, what remains of Carthage, the famed dominant city of the Western Mediterranean in the 5th century BC and once home to the enigmatic Queen Dido is Roman. There are six major sites to see, and although fairly spread out – it is easily manoeuvred in part by the TGM (light rail). Make a start at Byrsa Hill, which towers over the entire area and enjoy the fantastic views of the whole site before exploring in more depth. There is a Roman amphitheatre, a theatre, villas, baths and even the remains of the Punic ports, which constituted the very heart of Carthage’s power and prominence. There is plenty to see at Carthage – just don’t expect Dido’s empire – those Romans got everywhere!
