Star Wars fans will better know the bizarre little underground dwellings of ‘Les Troglodytes’ at Matmata, as the home of Sidi Driss, where the interiors of Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru's house were filmed in the first of George Lucas’ trilogy. This little mountain town, 43km southwest of Gabes would certainly look more at home on a distant planet. The whitewashed walls are dotted with intriguing dark openings linked by little staircases. There are three underground hotels to stay in – the Marhala, the Sidi Driss and the Les Berberes. The local people, of which approximately 1000 still live in the underground dwellings understandably aren’t the friendliest welcoming party imaginable – so when you’re indulging those Luke Skywalker fantasies – just remember that it’s still someone’s home.
