Turkey - Cappadocia – Rock Houses and lunar landscapes

Turkey sightseeing, attractions and online travel guide

Who needs moon-landings when Turkey has it’s very own lunar landscape here on earth? Formed by the eruption of three volcanoes around 10 million years ago, the strange wonderful scenery of Cappadocia on the central Anatolian Plain is a major tourist hot spot. As far back as 400BC, people have carved various styles of dwellings out of the soft volcanic rock to create scenes that wouldn’t look out of place in a Star Wars film. First built to hide from the Arab raids, the elaborate cave systems have continued to shelter generation after generation of persecuted settlers. From the elaborate rock churches with Byzantine frescoes at Goreme to the intricate, if slightly creepy monastic complex at Zelve and the underground cities of Kaymakli and Derinkuyu – this is really not something you want to miss. May the force be with you.
