Turkey - Hamams – Turkish Bath

Turkey sightseeing, attractions and online travel guide

The fine line between pleasure and pure masochistic pain can be found it all it’s glory in a traditional Turkish Bath, known as a "Hamam". Having been part of Turkey's culture for centuries as cleanliness is paramount in the Islamic religion, the bath-houses are as elaborate as the treatments. With fine marble pools, water jets, and drinking fountains, the bather has access to shaving facilities, lavatories and even tea stalls selling beverages. Work your way through a pore work-out of splashing water, steam and fragrant soap before reaching the bath attendants (known as a natir in a women’s bath and a tellak in the male’s). Stretch out on the heated platform whilst an attendant skilfully (if brutally) rubs away the layer of dead skin with a bath glove made of coarse raw silk. After a good soap and rinse you will go on to have less of a body massage than a ‘knead’. There are Hamam’s all over Turkey. Don’t miss the stunning historical baths of Istanbul. Who wouldn’t want to get beaten up in the name of cleanliness and relaxation?
