Built by James IV in 1498 on the site of Holyrood Abbey, the Palace of Holyrood has a long regal history and is the official residence of Queen Elizabeth II when she visits Scotland. When not in residence the Palace is open to the public and a guided tour will take you to the Historical Apartments where Mary Queen of Scots private secretary was brutally stabbed to death round and several rooms in the State Apartments, which are notable for their fine paintings and decoration.
