Edinburgh - The Grassmarket and Cowgate

Edinburgh sightseeing, attractions and online travel guide

Edinburgh’s premier pub scene is located in the area known as Grassmarket a locale frequented by students and young folk. The area actually has quite a dark history and was the venue for many executions including the Porteous Lynching as featured in Sir Walter Scott’s ‘The Heart of Midlothian’. Fridays get pretty hectic but any night of the week it’s a good place to go for a lively drink. At eastern end of Grassmarket is the seedier Cowgate, which again has more than its fair share of drinking establishments. The area has a distinctly dark, tunnel like atmosphere due to the numerous bridges that have been built above it.
