At the heart of every English community is the pub. The English pub is an institution, a warm, cosy, drinking haven and an escape from the pressures of the world. For centuries, friends, acquaintances and colleagues have used the tavern/coach-house/inn/pub as a meeting place in which to socialise, drink and get merry. Whether looking for a place to get rip-roaringly drunk, or somewhere to have a nice down to earth meal with the kids, the pub caters for all. Pubs are generally open from 11:00am until 11:00pm Monday-Saturday, and 12:00pm until 10:30pm Sunday, when they often close between 3:00pm and 5:30pm. English beers are renowned for being warm and flat, but this isn’t the case at all. In every pub there is a wide variety of excellent beers and bitters (from the keg or in a bottle). Beers are usually served at cellar temperatures and are not filtered, pasteurised and carbonated like the ones in the U.S. The pub is a British institution and should not be missed for a true taste of pure, unadulterated England.
