Founded in 1AD by the Romans, Bath was originally called Aquae Sulis in honour of the town’s amazing natural hot springs yielding 250,000 gallons of water each day. Bath was transformed into a stunning complex of bath houses centred around a temple dedicated to the goddess Sulis-Minerva. Though abandoned in the 5th century AD as the Roman Empire collapsed, the extensive lead-lined baths have stood the test of time and are open to visitors today. Roman Baths Museum and Pump Room are fascinating to visit. Open daily, the museum contains an extensive collection of objects such as coins, metal cups and a beautiful bronze brooch dropped into the baths by Romans over the years. In the Pump Room, visitors can soak up the atmosphere with a tea or coffee, or alternatively sample some of the spa water that inspired and attracted visitors for the last 2000 years.
