England - Walk York

England sightseeing, attractions and online travel guide

With almost 2000yrs as capital of the North, York has plenty to see on a walk around this fabulous city. Walkers can choose to stroll around the remains of Roman York to see how the Empire made it’s mark on the city and even visit the subterranean Roman baths. Perhaps move on to tour Viking York, taking in the fascinating Jorvik Centre along the way before strolling around the city’s medieval landmarks. There are plenty of medieval Guildhalls, including the stunning Merchant Adventurer’s Hall and churches adorned with the original ancient stained glass, not least of all York Minster – Europe’s largest medieval cathedral. The 13th century city walls also make for an interesting walk and a stroll around the 3-mile circuit provides amazing views over the city. Not least of all, the Tudor phase of York with it’s narrow alleyways, winding streets and black and white timber fronted buildings is a pleasure to walk around and enables the visitor to experience something of the timeless ambience encapsulated within this ancient city
