Probably one of the major things to be associated with Scotland are lochs – enclosed bodies of water immortalised either by legend or by local fables and songs. Loch Ness is by far the most notorious of all, not least for it’s legendary monster but also for it’s outstanding beauty. Stretching for 23 miles and watched over by the ruins of Castle Urquhart, Loch Ness is a must see for any visitor to the Highlands. There are over twenty lochs in Scotland and many are hill lochs, only visited by the keen angler, but they are superb places to visit for a stroll or picnic as they are incredibly tranquil renowned for their calm. Loch Lomond in particular is very popular. This 27½ square mile body of water is the largest in land waterway in Britain and has stunning scenery. Each loch has something individual to offer the visitor and there will undoubtedly be something to suit everyone.
