Located in the heart of Montevideo, is Plaza Independencia, a huge square containing the burial place of Uruguay’s biggest national hero, General Artigas, marked by a statue of a horse. Visitors will find the plaza a good starting point for touring round the city, with ruins of an old archway, office buildings, hotels and the Salvo Palace in different directions. The palace, built in 1927, has an amazing 26 stories and is the highest building in South America.
