Miami - Fairchild Tropical Garden

Miami sightseeing, attractions and online travel guide

One of Miami’s best kept secrets and a must for all plant lovers is The Fairchild Tropical Garden at Coral Gables just a few miles drive south of the city centre.

The largest tropical botanical garden in continental America the Fairchild is one of the world’s most important tropical plant collections. Covering 83 acres the gardens are home to rare collections of palms, cycads flowering trees and palms from all over the world. At the forefront of tropical plant research, Fairchild Tropical Garden plays a major part in preserving the biodiversity of the tropical environment and is an active member of Botanic Gardens Conservation International and the Centre for Plant Conservation.

Fairchild’s most popular attraction is the Windows to the Tropics exhibit, a 16,428 square foot conservatory with extensive displays of almost 2,000 species of plants from the humid tropics. Equally popular is the Richard H. Simons Rainforest exhibit blending native Florida species with authentic rainforest species collected from tropical forests in Latin America and other locations by the Fairchild plant scientists. This 2-acre exhibit has an aerial irrigation system to enhance rainfall and humidity offering visitors the opportunity to experience the plants and environment of the world's dwindling rainforest ecosystems.

The Garden is open from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. every day except December 25th. Admission is $8 for adults, $7 Senior citizens 65 and older, $4 for children 3 to 12.
