Grundarfjordur Youth Hostel HOSTEL Grundarfjordur Description
A Spanish proverb says: 'Do nothing, then rest.' This describes the ambience in the little fishing village of Grundarfjordur ideally, yet the town is right in the middle of the magical Sn fellsnes Peninsula which makes it an perfect stopover from which to discover nearby towns and points of interest. The legendary Sn fellsj kull glacier is only 20 few minutes west, and the ferry to the West Fjords is 45 few minutes to the east. As members of the Icelandic and International Youth Hostel A ociations, the owners, Johanna and Johnny, pride themselves on keeping a neat and nice hostel. The hostel itself is situated in one of the oldest houses in town, a mere 150 meters from the local swimming pool. It has 20 beds, 2 kitchens and a Television-room and makes use of the fastest high-speed web access connection offered in Iceland today. Breakfast and bed linen are offered for a little extra fee that is not included in the price. Despite the unwinded ambience there is a multitude of things to do and services offered. Other than strolling around and watching the boats land fish at the harbour or taking a fish factory tour, visitors can go golfing on one of the finest 9-hole golf courses in the country, horse-riding, bicycling, kayaking, hilking and walking, fishing, mountain-climbing, scree-running and swimming, or just hang out in the hostel grounds with a cold drink and enjoy the all-night summer sun. Johanna and Johnny can a ist in arranging any or all of these things to do. There are as well snowmobiling and whale watching tours offered in nearby vicinitys. Services in Grundarfjordur include gift and souvenir shops, two banks (which includes a cash dispenser), little supermarketplace, gym, sauna and seafood at Hotel Framnes, pub and restaurant Kr kan, E o petrol and service station, state alcohol shop, garage and tyre service, Detours Travel Service, swimming pool and badminton/basketball/football courts. Summer 2003 sees the opening of the Eyrnearggja Heritage center that, apart from its exhibits, will house a little coffee shop and the Galleri Gr sk handcraft shop. Welcome to Grundarfjordur!
