Riad vs hotel: where to stay in Marrakech
Courtyard house in the medina, or resort out in the Palmeraie? Both can be wonderful — for different trips. Here's the honest version.
What a riad actually is
A riad is a traditional courtyard house in the old city (the medina). From the alley you see nothing but a heavy door; inside, rooms wrap around an open courtyard with a fountain or small pool, and a roof terrace looks out over the rooftops toward the Atlas. Most riads have four to ten rooms, so a stay feels closer to being a guest in a beautiful home than checking into a hotel.
Choose a riad if…
- Atmosphere is the point. Zellige tilework, carved cedar, candlelit courtyards — nothing else feels like Marrakech in the same way.
- You want to walk everywhere. The souks, Jemaa el-Fna and the museums are minutes away on foot.
- You value personal service. Staff who remember your name, breakfast made when you wake up, dinner cooked to order with a day's notice.
- You're travelling as a couple or small group. Riads are intimate by design — and you can often rent one outright for a celebration.
Choose a hotel if…
- You want a real pool. Most riad pools are plunge pools; resort pools in the Palmeraie or Hivernage are for actual swimming.
- You're travelling with young kids. Open courtyards, steep stairs and small pools take supervision; resorts have space and kids' clubs.
- Accessibility matters. Medina alleys are car-free, uneven and stepped; taxis can't reach most riad doors, and few riads have lifts.
- You want predictability. Big-brand hotels offer gyms, room service at 3am, and identical standards to everywhere else — that's the point of them.
Price and noise, honestly
Riads span everything from €60 guesthouses to €600 palaces, and mid-range riads are usually better value than hotels at the same price — you're paying for character and attention rather than facilities. As for noise: the medina wakes early (the dawn call to prayer is part of the experience), interior courtyard rooms are generally quiet, and light sleepers should simply pack earplugs and ask for a room away from the street.
The short answer
First trip, no small children, and you want Marrakech to feel like Marrakech: stay in a riad in the medina — it will be the thing you remember. Add a resort only if you want a pool-and-spa day or two at the end. Our curated collection features the riads we'd book ourselves, from honest budget houses to full palaces.
